How Custom Glass Railings Are Built

1. Site Measurement
On-site measurement of run lengths, angles, and mounting surfaces. This defines panel sizes and the install order.

2. Hardware Installation
Posts, base channels, or spigots are anchored first, before glass is cut. Alignment is set so panels sit flush on arrival.

3. Glass Cutting and Final Install
12mm panels are cut to spec, delivered, and installed. Finishing covers gasket trim, handrail attachment, and a final alignment check.

Custom Mounting for Any Surface
Mounting depends on what your railing attaches to. Custom glass railings install on concrete decks, wood framing, fascia edges, or stair stringers using one of the following systems:
Base channel — 12mm glass set into an aluminum channel along the deck or slab edge
Spigot — point clamps that hold the glass from below, anchored to concrete or solid surfaces
Standoff — hardware that mounts panels to a vertical face like a fascia or stair side
Top-mount posts — aluminum posts anchored to the deck, used for semi-frameless systems
Fascia mount — hardware that wraps the deck edge, for projects where the surface cannot be drilled
The mounting method is selected during the on-site measurement based on your structure, finish goals, and code requirements. Each option meets BC Building Code when properly installed.
Railing Types
Frameless vs. Semi-Frameless Custom Glass Railings
Both systems meet BC Building Code requirements for exterior installations. Your choice depends on your home's architectural style. Contemporary homes suit frameless. Traditional homes can use semi-frameless to maintain some classic elements while updating materials.
Frameless Systems
Frameless exterior glass fence panels provide the cleanest modern look. No posts interrupt the glass panels. Your home's facade shows continuous glass from end to end. This suits contemporary and modern architecture. Pricing typically ranges from $300 to $400 per linear foot.
Semi-Frameless Systems
Semi-frameless glass panels use aluminum posts spaced up to 42 inches apart with glass panels between them. Posts provide vertical definition that works with traditional or craftsman home styles. This option costs less, typically $250 to $350 per linear foot.
Curved Glass Railings
Curved glass railings follow the line of a staircase, balcony, or deck where straight panels would not. Each curve is fabricated to your radius in 12mm glass, then mounted to match the adjoining sections. Curves can be combined with frameless or semi-frameless runs in the same project. Pricing is quoted per project based on radius and length.
Glass Privacy Walls
Glass privacy walls add wind protection or visual separation between decks, hot tubs, or neighbouring balconies. Panels are taller than standard railings and mounted with frameless hardware in 12mm glass. Walls can stand alone or sit at the end of a railing run. Pricing is quoted per project based on height and length.
FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a glass railing custom?
Custom railings are sized and finished to a specific project. Stock systems use fixed widths that often leave gaps at corners or force awkward end conditions.
How long does a custom glass railing project take?
6 to 8 weeks from first measurement to finished install. Larger or more complex layouts may take longer.
Can custom glass railings be curved?
Yes. Curved panels can be built into stairs, balconies, or decks where a straight panel will not follow the structure.
How much does a custom glass railing cost?
Frameless typically runs $300 to $400 per linear foot, semi-frameless $250 to $350. A site visit confirms the figure for your project.
Do custom glass railings meet BC Building Code?
Yes. Every install is engineered to code, with documentation provided for permits and inspection.
